Used Appliance Tips & Information

Get the scoop on used appliances, how to shop for them, and whether or not they're best for you.

Buying a used appliance can save on the family budget, but there are some risks out there that you should be aware of. The following information will get rid of some of

those risks! Let's start with a few fundamentals:

What Size?

Although there are general, standard sizes for most appliances, many still vary in size. Be sure to measure the space the appliance will be going into, and then investigate the size of the appliance you would like that is capable of fitting into that space. NEVER shop first and measure last. It takes up more time and can cause heartache. You wouldn't want to find something so perfect for yourself, all to get it and find out it won't fit! So measure first!

What Color?

There are 4 basic colors of appliances: white, black, bisque/biscuit, and stainless steel. Now some manufacturers do produce their own special colors, but we'll stick with these since every manufacturer makes these. Because you're buying used, it may be a little difficult to find matches to the rest of your appliances, so don't spend TOO much time hunting for a special color. White is the standard, so if you're buying used expect white, and if you find something colorful you like, it will feel like winning the lottery!... or just finding a good deal on an appliance.

What Style?

Every appliance comes in a different style. Such as refrigerators... they come in Side-By-Side, Top-Mount, Bottom-Mount, French Door. Ranges... gas or electric. Dishwashers... built-in or mobile. Just know what kind of the appliance you need and want.

Now lets get a little deeper into detail with buying used...

First of all, warranties! Check for a warranty from the seller. How long is it? What does it cover? Parts AND Labor? What is the return policy? These are the most important questions to ask. I would hate for you to go somewhere, see something you LOVE, and find out it has no warranty. You can take your chances but I would say MOVE ON! There are plenty of other companies out there who would love your business and will offer you a warranty as well. What's the use if it's beautiful and stops working the second day?

Next, what kind of shape is it in? Does it have dents or scratches? Is there any rust? Do the knobs all work? Are all of the racks and shelves there? Are the hinges on the door supportive? Check the gaskets on refrigerators. (Do this by closing the door on a piece of paper. Is the paper easy to remove? If so the hinges need adjusting.) Check for insulation on ranges. How do the doors open? Easily? Or difficult? Try to test drive the appliance at the place of purchase or as soon as it gets to your home to avoid any return troubles if you need to return it. Inspect the product thoroughly before buying and after.

Also, make sure the appliance comes with everything you need to install it. Some appliances require new parts such as power cords and ducts, these items range anywhere from $7 to $20, and aren't difficult to install yourself.

Finally, How much does it cost to operate? Please check this out. You can do this by copying the model number down. And if you can't read the model number, DON'T BUY IT! If you need a part later on or want to order the instruction booklet you'll need that piece of information.

So again, check out the cost of operation. You can take the model number and call the manufacturer or check online at their site for their EnergyGuide rating. That's pretty much it. As long as you take your time and make a checklist of things to look for before you shop, you should be in good shape; and if you're buying from a reputable dealer that offers a good warranty, you can buy with more peace.
